Stress management with one word is actually a very ancient technique of relaxation and calm. It is the technique of using one word like a mantra. Let's define mantra. A mantra is a word or phrase that one repeats constantly to oneself. Either silently or out aloud. It can increase concentration, improve relaxation, and, best of all, reduce stress.
The constant repetition of the word helps to focus your attention on it and away from negative or stressful influences around you. It is a very old and ancient way to increase relaxation that our modern society can benefit from. It has been known for thousands of years and is used by many people today as a stress management tool.
In our modern age repetition with a mantra became popular with Transcendental Meditation. Where a personal secret sound from a guru is given and that acts as a mantra. You then go to a quiet spot and practice it daily.
Dr Herbert Benson of 'The Relaxation Response' fame also obtained good stress management results. He used a simple technique of combining silent repetition of a word with awareness of breathing. His patients sit in a comfortable chair, close their eyes, become aware of their breathing, and mentally repeat the word 'One' with each exhalation. It works. Laboratory studies have shown that use of a single word mantra reduces stress and makes one more calm.
A little more on the technique. You chose a word to be your mantra. You repeat your word mentally to yourself. When your attention wanders you bring your mind back to the word. Your mind will probably stay focused on the word for a while, then wander away from it . You reel your mind back again. Then back and forth with an attempt to focus on your word.
Another tip. Try it for 5 minutes daily. Start with small steps. Five minutes of daily practice using your own mantra is better than doing a one hour session, then leaving it for a week, then starting again. Results in stress management come from daily use.
It can be challenging to believe that a one word mantra will help relieve stress . But if the ancient sages and the medical profession say it works as a stress management tool who am I to argue with their stress findings?
